THE FUNDAMENTALS

Medicare Basics

01

Medicare is a federal health insurance program primarily for people 65 and older.

02

Some people under 65 may qualify due to a disability or certain medical conditions.

03

Medicare is made up of 4 main parts  A, B, C, and D each covering different types of care.

WHAT'S COVERED

The Four Parts of Medicare

A

Hospital Care

Covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, and some home health services.

B

Medical Services

Covers doctor visits, outpatient services, preventive care, and medically necessary supplies.

C

Medicare Advantage

Bundles Parts A, B, and often D together through a private insurer. Many plans add dental, vision, and hearing benefits.

An all-in-one alternative to Original Medicare

D

Prescription Drugs

A separate plan that helps cover the cost of prescription medications. Requires enrollment through a private insurer.

KNOW WHAT YOU'LL PAY

Understanding Medicare Costs

$

Medicare is not completely free. Most people pay a monthly premium for Part B.

%

You typically pay deductibles and coinsurance in addition to your premium.

80

Original Medicare generally covers about 80% of approved costs — you pay the remaining 20%.

!

There is no out-of-pocket maximum with Original Medicare alone — costs can add up quickly without additional coverage.

KNOW THE GAPS

What Medicare Doesn't Cover

Original Medicare leaves some important gaps. Knowing them ahead of time helps you plan.

Long-Term Care

Extended nursing home stays or custodial care are not fully covered by Medicare.

✕ Dental, Vision & Hearing

Routine dental, vision, and hearing services are not covered under Original Medicare.

Prescription Drugs

Drug coverage requires a separate Part D plan or a Medicare Advantage plan that includes it.

✕ Care Outside the U.S.

Coverage for medical care while traveling internationally is very limited.

Coverage Gaps

Many people need supplemental coverage (Medigap) or a Medicare Advantage plan to fill these gaps and protect themselves from unexpected costs.

YOUR CHOICES

Plans & Options

Original Medicare

  • Choose any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare
  • No network restrictions — maximum flexibility
  • Covers 80% of approved costs; you pay the rest
  • No out-of-pocket maximum
  • Often paired with a Medigap supplement plan

Medicare Advantage (Part C)

  • Bundles hospital, medical, and often drug coverage
  • May include dental, vision, and hearing benefits
  • Typically includes an out-of-pocket maximum
  • Plans vary by company, location, and year
  • May have network restrictions and different rules

Medigap Supplement Plans

  • Helps cover what Original Medicare doesn't pay
  • Plans (like Plan G) are standardized by the government
  • Same coverage no matter which company you choose
  • The main difference between companies is the monthly premium
  • You can change your supplement plan at any time during the year

Why it Matters

Medicare changes every year. Premiums, deductibles, and coverage can shift annually. Plans may add or remove benefits. Doctors and networks change. Prescription drug coverage can change as well. That's why reviewing your plan each year matters.

Choosing the right Medicare coverage isn't just about the cost — it's about making sure you have access to the care you need, when you need it. Without the right plan, unexpected expenses and coverage gaps can quickly become overwhelming.

Our goal is simple: to make sure you understand your coverage and feel confident in it. There's never any cost or obligation — just honest guidance.
